What is Vioxx
Vioxx, also called Rofecoxib is an anti-inflammatory drug that has been created by Merck & Co. It has been accepted by the Food and Drug Administration to treat osteoarthritis and dysmenorrhea. Vioxx can also be found under the brand Ceoxx and Ceeoxx. It is available by prescription in many countries. Vioxx is part of a class of durg called NSAIDS which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.NSAIDS is known to inhibit an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which normally stimulates chemicals in someones body which creates the feeling of pain.
The withdraw of Vioxx from the market
After a study known as VIGOR (Vioxx GI Outcomes Research), which compared Vioxx to another drug naproxen, results proved that Vioxx users had a 4-fold increase risk of havinf a heart attack then those using naproxen! The study was conducted on a 12 months periode. The results of this study were then submitted to the Food and Drug Association, which then introduced a warning condition on Vioxx’s products to inform on an increase of heart attack risks. After several warnings to Merck to inform on the safety of its Vioxx, They decided to withdraw from the markets all the Vioxx products from the shelves on the 30th of September, 2004. This was done on a voluntary basis from Merck itself without the recommendation of the FDA.
Vioxx lawsuits
Given the recent studies and the withdraw from the market, Vioxx is now facing more than 4500 vioxx lawsuits from different parties across the country.
